Commercial hemp liberalization: a step towards sustainability and economic growth

On 8 July 2024, the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft (BMEL) published the draft of the Commercial Hemp Liberalization Act (Nutzhanfliberalisierungsgesetzes, NLG). The draft aims to liberalize the cultivation and handling of industrial hemp and eliminate existing legal uncertainties. The most important changes include the deletion of the abuse clause and the authorisation of indoor cultivation. This is a significant step that has the potential to promote sustainability, climate protection and biodiversity.
